The Anchorage Museum, Plastic Pollution Coalition, Sea Scavengers and Alaska Sealife Center present an evening about GYRE, an expedition to the Aleutian Islands and the northern fringe of the North Pacific Gyre in June 2012. An international team of artists and scientists, including ecologist Carl Safina, will journey to Alaska to change the way we view some of the most disturbing cultural artifacts of our time: plastic pollution. The voyage will culminate in an art exhibition that will travel the United States and abroad with support from the Smithsonian Institution.
Meet expedition artists Mark Dion and Pam Longobardi, Chief Curator Julie Decker of the Anchorage Museum, Alaska SeaLife Center Director of Conservation Howard Ferren and expedition photographer Kip Evans to learn about the project. Susan Dworak of Sea Scavengers and Daniella Dimitrova Russo of Plastic Pollution Coalition will also be present~

Kip just returned from an expedition with the Sylvia Earle Alliance to the Swan Islands. Located 90 miles off the coast of Honduras, the Swan Islands are situated at the southern boundary of the Mesoamerican Reef, the Atlantic Ocean’s largest system of coral reefs. This area is one of Dr. Sylvia Earle’s “hope spots”, a term coined to describe areas of the ocean that are either already a marine protected area or that are in need of this type of special protection. The expedition team expected pristine conditions due to the uninhabited status of the Swan Islands, but after completing several dives they soon discovered that even the these remote islands are not free from the threat of human disturbance. Many of the coral reefs surrounding the Swan Islands showed signs of degradation from both over-fishing as well as past hurricane damage. Although storms are a naturally occurring threat to ocean ecosystems, coupled with over-fishing, recovery can be protracted or never occur.

The video below was produced by Kip and highlights the Mesoamerican Reef ecosystem. To learn more about this expedition and support “hope spots” around the world, please visit The Sylvia Earle Alliance.

These ‘On Assignment’ Expeditions are designed to teach high school students about the local environment and culture while allowing them to develop a new skill, such as photography. During these workshops, Kip will take students to several iconic locations along the Big Sur Coast, teach them about the local marine environment and help them to develop their photography skills.

Kip’s film, A Wave of Change, was featured at this years 8th annual San Francisco Ocean Film Festival held earlier this month at Pier 39. A Wave of Change is a 10 minute documentary film highlighting the network of Central Coast marine protected areas (MPAs). The video showcases underwater footage of kelp forests, wetland areas, and offers dialogue with expert scientists to share with their perspectives on the importance of California’s MPA network. Click here to read an in-depth review of the film.

“The ocean is in serious trouble right now. If you consider that 50% of the world’s coral reefs are in trouble, the growing problem of ocean acidification, over fishing and many other issues, you will see that we need to act now — we are running out of time,” says Kip Evans, filmmaker for A Wave of Change. “As a filmmaker, I want to highlight the positive steps that are being taken, actions that precipitate significant change. Marine protected areas may be our last chance to protect the ocean before it’s too late.”

Read Kip’s entire interview with the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival.

A Wave of Change was part of a larger program at the film festival that focused on international marine protected areas. In addition to several films, the MPA program also included a panel discussion with scientists, fishermen, and conservation leaders from both Mexico and California who discussed the challenges and success stories associated with the establishment of MPAs. Read press coverage of this special program here and here.
